RS02 Project: Research and Innovation in Pharmaceutical Chromatography

A New Machine for Operator Safety

The RS02 Project was launched with the goal of developing an innovative prototype for the pharmaceutical industry: a chromatography machine designed to enhance operator safety. The core innovation lies in a semi-automatic system that reduces direct exposure to hazardous chemicals, currently handled manually with significant risks.

Started in 2021 and still ongoing, the project is set to become the subject of a patent and represents a major step forward in the state of the art of industrial chromatography.

Innovation and Objectives

Traditional column chromatography involves the manual handling of the solid adsorbent, which becomes harmful after use. With the new machine, this operation will be performed safely thanks to a semi-automatic emptying system, designed with new electromechanical components.

The main objectives of the project are:

  • to increase operator safety;

  • to improve processing speed;

  • to simplify usage procedures.

From Research to Prototype

The research and development process required both creativity and a systematic approach.

  • 2021: definition of objectives, market research, feasibility studies, and construction of the first prototype, followed by preliminary testing.

  • 2022: continuation of testing, evaluation of results, and introduction of necessary modifications to achieve a fully sealed system meeting technical and performance standards.

These activities led to new and original solutions, validated by tests and trials, capable of overcoming the limitations of existing technologies.

Challenges Faced

Like any R&D effort, the RS02 Project encountered moments of uncertainty. The main challenges included:

  • developing a semi-automatic system that was functional and practical;

  • introducing moving components while ensuring safety and tight sealing;

  • designing internal filters capable of retaining substances such as silica without compromising performance.

Results and Perspectives

The initial objectives have been achieved. The new machine stands out from competitors because it:

  • reduces chemical exposure, improving operator safety;

  • increases chromatography processing speed;

  • simplifies use, eliminating the need for manual handling of hazardous substances.

The project enabled the company to gain new knowledge and paved the way for a patentable product, competitive in international markets.
